Anemos, Maiden Voyage Calls Port Newark Auto Terminal

As the marine transportation industry continues to make significant strides in environmental stewardship, the waves and winds of innovation are carrying cargo from all over the world to our ports. This dedication to environmental stewardship is at the core of our industry's mission and is a driving force behind our innovative initiatives.

On September 3rd, our teams at Port Newark Auto Terminal welcomed Anemos, the first sailing cargo ship of its kind in modern history. The three-week journey from Le Havre, France, was her first transatlantic voyage leveraging sail propulsion and setting the course towards a less hydrocarbon-dependent future. Constructed by TOWT (TransOceanic Wind Transport), Anemos, which comes from the ancient Greek term for ‘wind,’ is the first of an eight-ship fleet to integrate classic sailing technology with the demands of modern logistics. Uniquely outfitted to transport edible cargo, the ship’s holds are monitored by an automated quality control system offering a 100% controlled environment and secure stability controlled by an intelligent ballast system.

Demonstrating the ability to harness the power of wind, an abundant and renewable resource, to traverse oceans more efficiently showcases that sustainable practices can coexist with economic viability and offers modern cargo vessels a compelling case to invest further in green technologies.

Similarly, Ports America’s strategic initiatives focus on reducing our carbon footprint, investing in innovative technologies, and enhancing operational efficiencies to meet the net-zero 2050 ambition. We have implemented a range of projects aimed at minimizing our environmental impact, including completing our decarbonization Roadmap, creating our Scope 1 GHG emission baseline, developing energy-efficient improvements, assessing energy requirements for greener equipment per port location, and adopting renewable energy sources at various locations.

Ultimately, the commitments and advancements being made in maritime transportation sustainability practices mark a pivotal moment for the industry and serve as a powerful reminder that solutions to our most pressing challenges often lie at the intersection of tradition and innovation. In celebrating this historic moment, we are embracing a vision of a world where progress and preservation go hand in hand. Here's to the voyage that has just begun and the new course it charts for the maritime industry and our planet.
