Zero Harm, no tolerance of unsafe conditions or behaviors, is the basis for our safety program.  All employees and other visitors to our facilities are required to follow all safety and environmental standards to achieve zero work related injuries and illnesses.

Our Corporate Central Safety Committee is chaired by the President and CEO.  Each site’s Central Committee is also chaired by a member of top management.  The Committees oversee the policies and overall direction of the Health, Safety, and Environmental program.

 The Corporate Health, Safety, and Environmental team assists in facilitating implementation and with input from site HSE personnel, is responsible for developing corporate health, safety and environmental strategy.

Our Safety Management System incorporates visible leadership by senior management, written safety standards, and environmental procedures that demonstrate consistently high standards of performance and continuous safety improvement. 

The S.T.A.R. Program, Stop Taking Avoidable Risks, was developed to provide consistency and clarity of our safety priorities and engage employees and contractors active participation in the improvement of our safety practices.

S.T.A.R. incorporates four vital safety elements:

  1. Leadership
  2. Safety Standards (the Fatal 5)
  3. Behavior & Supervision
  4. Support & Services

The Fatal 5 are a set of safety standards whose primary purpose is to create minimum performance standards related to the 5 issues proven by statistics to cause the majority of fatalities within the stevedoring industry.

  3. Working at Heights
  4. Handlings Loads
  5. Contractor Management
